A Series of Films Directed by Women

Henri Matisse. Le bonheur de vivre. 1905-1906. Oil on canvas. Barnes Foundation, Lincoln University, Merion, PA, USA.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Series of Films Directed by Women in March and April will include 8 screenings featuring 6 leading women directors from around the world. The six directors include Jane Campion, Penny Marshall, Julie Taymor, Doris Dörrie, Lina Wertmüller, and Agnès Varda.
For three consecutive Mondays in April (April 7, 14, and 21) the series will feature films by Agnès Varda (b. 1928, Brussels, Belgium), a French film director considered by many critics the best women director working today. Her movies, photographs, and art installations focus on documentary realism, feminist issues, and social commentary   with a distinct experimental style. Her films have similarities to the New Wave, but Varda belongs more precisely to the parallel  Rive Gauche  movement, a group, including Marguerite Duras and Alain Robbe-Grillet, who often collaborated with each other, and were strongly tied to the nouveau roman movement in literature and politically positioned in the Left.
